When filmmaker Anurag Kashyap confessed doing drugs out of depression

Anurag Kashyap celebrates his birthday on September 10. He is known for his collaborations with talented actors and his willingness to tackle bold and socially relevant themes in his films. He has also been involved in various controversies and has been a vocal advocate for artistic freedom in Indian cinema. His work has significantly contributed to changing the landscape of Indian cinema by pushing boundaries and challenging traditional storytelling norms. But do you know that behind this very bold image of him, Anurag fought a lot of battles within? Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap went through a rough patch in his life when a lot of his films weren’t working. During one of his interviews, he said, "There was a phase in my life in early 2000 when my films were banned, and I was introduced to alcohol in 2003 after Black Friday was banned. I went through a personal phase of drugs from 2006 to 2008 before I did Dev D. I did drugs out of depression, and my films not releasing. I was more abusing chemical drugs, it was a massive thing of shame for me." Anurag shared that Dev D was the film that helped him pass through his toughest time. The actor again faced a rough patch when No Smoking flopped. Backed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film was made on a huge budget. When it sank at the box office, the director, Kashyap, fell into depression, not expecting the critics to lash out at it. The film's plot revolves around a chain smoker named K (played by John Abraham), who is addicted to smoking. His life takes a bizarre turn when he decides to join a mysterious rehabilitation centre run by a character named Baba Bengali (played by Paresh Rawal). Instead of helping him quit smoking through conventional methods, the rehabilitation centre uses extreme and surreal techniques to break K's addiction. In another conversation with Samdish Bhatia, the director further talked about the time when he again went on steroids. It was in 2021 that he had a heart attack. He shared, "In May, I had a heart attack, then I got a severe asthma attack. Then I went back on steroids and slipped into drinking. In depression, Vishal ji called me to do 'Modern Love', then Aasman called for 'Kuttey' and Zoya also called. If you will see, in all three projects, I have worked on a wheelchair." Kashyap is known for his innovative and unconventional approach to filmmaking, which has earned him both critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

The first happened because I was very young. I think it came from a place where I felt like I wanted more. Just for that one person, I don't think that I could have given up many other things that I wanted. I felt like there was much more to see. Another heartbreak was that I could see that the person was not good for me… as an influence in my life and as a long-term partner.” What is the biggest red flag according to Tamannaah Bhatia? The actress shared, “One of the red flags is liars. People who lie for small things. Like, say this pen is something that you bought but it is gifted to you. The funny part is they lie for small things, not even a big thing… Then they will lie for everything. Relationship advice? Main toh bolungi kisi ki na suno (Don't listen to anyone). I was told Jo problem apko relationship ke absolute shuruat mein dikhe na (The problems you see at the beginning of the relationship) like in the first one or two weeks of the relationship, those problems will persist and they will become the roadblock in your relationship. I experienced something similar so it is true.” Tamannaah Bhatia’s relationship with Vijay Varma  Notably, Tamannaah and Vijay's relationship rumours started after an alleged kissing video of theirs from New Year 2023 had gone viral on the internet. When Bobby Deol feared he'd be dropped from 'Animal': 'I waited 1.5 years'

Bollywood actor Bobby Deol is ecstatic with the appreciation he is getting for his portrayal of a menacing mute antagonist Abrar Haque in the 2023 film ‘Animal’, something which he said was not easy and for which he had to learn sign language to make it look authentic. However, in an interview with Humans of Bombay, the actor shared how he feared being dropped from the film after not being called to shoot for over a year.  Bobby Deol felt Sandeep Reddy Vanga would drop him from ‘Animal’  He said, “I waited 1.5 years to shoot the film. The film is 3.5 hours long, so they were shooting with Ranbir for a long time… and during that period, I kept thinking, ‘Are they going to change their mind? Will they suddenly say they don’t require me?’ Those thoughts crossed my mind, but Sandeep Reddy is a sweetheart. I learned sign language for the role. It was fun and exciting and it became a huge success—although I never imagined it would become a cult hit, I had a gut feeling about it.” Bobby Deol on playing a mute character in ‘Animal’ In an earlier interview with IANS, Bobby said he was stunned when director Sandeep Reddy Vanga told him he had no lines in the film. “When Sandeep said that your character is mute, I was like ‘What? I am not allowed to speak… I mean everyone likes the way I speak’ and he said ‘Yes, but I want this character to be mute' I was like ok,” Bobby recounted. His hard work paid off, quite literally. “I did not want it to look like it was not part of my body language and I was speaking in sign language so it was fun and somewhere it made people notice my work even more because it was challenging,” said the son of Bollywood veteran star Dharmendra. Bobby Deol’s upcoming projects  In the coming months, he will be seen in several projects including Alia Bhatt's spy film. Alia portrays a female agent in the film, helmed by YRF's indigenous director Shiv Rawail. This film also stars Sharvari, who is teamed with Alia as a super agent on a mission. Bobby also has Aryan Khan’s debut project ‘Stardom’.  He will also be seen locking horns with Suriya in 'Kanguva'. The official synopsis of the Tamil film read, "A story that travels 500 years from the 1700s to 2023 is about a hero who has to fulfill a mission left unfinished." Siruthai Siva has directed the film. Disha Patani, Natarajan Subramaniam, Jagapathi Babu, and Yogi Babu are also part of 'Kanguva'.

Alia Bhatt, Vedang Raina in Jigra Pic/Instagram

Is Alia Bhatt’s ‘Jigra’ inspired by her mother Soni Razdan’s 1993 film ‘Gumrah’?

The makers of Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina-starrer ‘Jigra’ unveiled its teaser trailer on Sunday. The plot revolves around Alia, a protective sister, who hints at Vedang having little time. He is seen being arrested in a foreign country when Alia tries to rescue him from prison. She is helped in this mission by Manoj Pahwa and Rahul Ravindran. The film has been directed by Vasan Bala.  Alia Bhatt’s ‘Jigra’ inspired by the 1993 film ‘Gumrah’?  According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, Alia’s film is an adaptation of ‘Gumrah’ which starred Sanjay Dutt, Sridevi, Rahul Roy, and her mother Soni Razdan. A source informed the portal, “‘Jigra’ makers decided to remake ‘Gumrah’ but with certain modifications. Two of the biggest changes they have made from the story of the original is that here it’s the girl who’s saving the boy. Also, instead of them being lovers, they are siblings. Interestingly, ‘Gumrah’ was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and now his daughter Alia plays the lead in its adaptation.” Netizens react to Alia Bhatt’s ‘Jigra’ being a remake As the news was shared on Reddit, many took to the comments section and discussed the same. One wrote, “Sanju did rescue Sri from the false drug trafficking case. Also, there was the sibling angle with Soni Razdan having a brother in the adjacent cell and she sneaking out with Sri to take treats brought by Anupam Kher to him, which remains the most moving part of the film. I have mentioned it before on here and no wonder it's an actual article now.” Another added, “This makes me think, Alia did make her mother proud. I mean whatever she is in real life is a different thing altogether but starring in an adaptation of a movie that had her mother in a very small role and who always did small roles only but her daughter is like the star star.” Jigra is A Remake...👀byu/Chai_Lijiye inBollyBlindsNGossip Alia Bhatt’s upcoming projects  In the coming months, Alia Bhatt will also be seen headlining Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film 'Love and War', which also features Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. This is WHY Anurag Kashyap thought 'Gangs of Wasseypur' ruined his life

Anurag Kashyap's 'Gangs of Wasseypur' was recently re-released in theatres. It is a fact that Kashyap's gangster drama is a cult classic, but do you know that after the film's release, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap said his life got "ruined"? Do you wish to know how? Here's why Kashyap thought his life was ruined. Why Anurag Kashyap Thought 'Gangs of Wasseypur' Ruined His Life It was 7 years after the release of the cult film that Kashyap took to Instagram and shared that people started expecting him to make the same kind of movies after 'Wasseypur' was released. "Seven years back is exactly when my life got ruined. Since then, all everyone wants me to do is the same thing over and over again, whereas I have only been unsuccessfully trying to get away from that expectation. Anyway, I hope that 'Saadhe Saati' is over by the end of 2019," Kashyap tweeted on his X account. 7 years back is exactly when my life got ruined. Since then all everyone wants me to do is the same thing over and over again. Whereas I have only been unsuccessfully been trying to get away from that expectation . Anyways hope that “साढ़े साती” is over by the end of 2019. https://t.co/QQ5PpGcp2E — Anurag Kashyap (@anuragkashyap72) June 22, 2019 The Anurag Kashyap directorial is based on a real-life story that revolves around a gangster who clashes with a coal mining mafia. Featuring an ensemble cast, including Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Manoj Bajpayee, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadha, and Tigmanshu Dhulia, the first installment of 'Gangs of Wasseypur' was released on June 22, 2012. The Kashyap revenge drama has been one of the blockbuster films to come out of Indian cinema in the last decade. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadha, Manoj Bajpayee, Huma Qureshi, and others, the film is considered a Bollywood cult classic. The director announced that it would be back in theaters from August 30 to September 5.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Anurag Kashyap (@anuragkashyap10) With audiences showing more interest in revisiting classic Hindi films, the popular action-drama 'Gangs of Wasseypur' returned to the big screen for a few days. Let's revisit the lines that showcase Nawazuddin's unmatched talent: We celebrated 12 years of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur 2’ on 8 August. it's impossible to not highlight the film's standout performer, Nawazuddin Siddiqui. His portrayal of Faizal Khan remains etched in the minds of audiences, largely due to his impeccable delivery of some of the most memorable dialogues in Indian cinema. "Baap ka, dada ka, bhai ka, sabka badla lega re tera Faizal."Nawazuddin's intense delivery of this line encapsulates Faizal Khan's all-consuming quest for vengeance, making it one of the most powerful moments in the film. "Tumse na ho payega."This simple yet impactful line, delivered with Nawazuddin's trademark nonchalance, has become a cultural phenomenon, illustrating Faizal's scornful dismissal of his enemies' abilities. "Keh ke loonga."With his cold, calculating tone, Nawazuddin immortalizes this dialogue, which epitomizes Faizal's ruthless determination to exact revenge. Kashyap has helmed films like "Black Friday", "Dev.D", "Gulaal", "Ugly", "Raman Raghav", "Mukkabaaz" and "Manmarziyaan".

Still from Gangs of Wasseypur and Manmarziyaan

Birthday Special: Anurag Kashyap’s most brutal, beautiful characters

Anurag Kashyap’s debut directorial that was supposed to release in 2003 called ‘Paanch’ never saw the light of the day. And the hence the mystery behind the missing 'Paanch' in the lyrics ‘Ek Do Teen Chaar Che’ in ‘Dev D’. The puzzle was solved by the maker himself, and the reference to his unseen debut was both mysterious and meta. But the repertoire that followed later, the filmmaker’s cinema got darker and more dazzling, and there’s no bigger irony than that. He proved one doesn’t have to be in the light to shine.  As the filmmaker turns a year older on September 10, we look back at some of his memorable characters.  Characters brought to life by Anurag Kashyap Talking about the characters his films have given us, it’s hard to talk about one role that stands out in ‘Black Friday’. It’s arguably one of the most perfect Hindi films in terms of scale, story, and sucking you into the scary world of Mumbai of 1993. Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Srivastava, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pawan Malhotra, and filmmaker Imtiaz Ali in a cameo, all leave a lasting impact. The red interrogation room is suffocating enough for the viewers, and the suspects whose confessions are bone-chilling. The colourful ensemble continued with a film titled after a colour itself- ‘Gulaal’. Menon reuniting with Kashyap was magnetic as ever, but the highlight of the enterprise was Rananjay Singh played by a stunning Abhimanyu Singh. His first and last scene have him in the same smirky expressions but the impact is devastatingly opposite. Expletives flow like poetry and wine in Kashyap’s world and so does in this drama about campus politics and demonic intents. After Bimal Roy and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it was Kashyap’s turn to give this tragic love his own imagination. He did only the way he could, replete with gore and darkness, but not without a sense of delight. Abhay Deol’s portrayal of heartbreak blended impressively with the filmmaker’s vision of this fictional tale of romance. Again, with ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, it’s impossible to single out one character in this maddening display of ingenious writing and incredible performances. Take your pick. Not too many filmmakers write characters the way Kashyap does. Kabhi Kabhi Lagta Hai Kashyap Hi Bhawan Hai! Oh yes, Ganesh Gaitonde from Sacred Games is there too.  In 2018, Kashyap gave his interpretation to a modern love triangle with 'Manmarziyaan'. His protagonist, the fiery Taapsee Pannu has a tough time controlling her emotions as she dabbles between her love Vicky who is non-commital and a more steady Robbie who brings in the peace in her life she never knew she needed.

Actor Deepak Tijori launches his music label for THIS reason

Actor-director Deepak Tijori has announced the launch of his music label by releasing the audio of Tijori Music's first song titled 'Gumshuda' across all popular music platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, JioSaavn, Gaana, Hungama and Wynk Music. He has joined hands with one of the best distributors 'Believe India' for his label to reach people globally. Speaking of launching his own music label, Deepak Tijori said, "The decision to launch Tijori Music is an emotional initiative which came from a very personal and tedious experience I faced with my last film Tipppsy, released in May 2024. As an independent filmmaker, I've always believed in creative freedom and having control over my work; but the process of releasing the music for a film was an eye-opener. Closer to releasing the film in theatres, I had to close a deal for the film's music by selling the songs to a music label. However, when I approached various known labels, I was shocked by the current state of the music market in India as the deals they offered lacked fair equity for the producers, putting us at a disadvantage with questionable transparency. I was left in a difficult position realizing that even if I wanted to use my own song in another film of mine in the future, I would especially have to beg the label for permission. For instance, I was outright refused when asked if I could post the songs from my film on my own YouTube channel." He added, "In case I rebelled, the music company had the right to strike my channel with a copyright claim. It was astonishing to learn that if I ever wanted to remake my own songs, which is quite common nowadays, I'd have to pay the label to use my own creation. This experience made me realize two things - First, to maintain control over my intellectual property (IPR), I needed to have my own music label. By owning Tijori Music, I can ensure that I have the freedom to use the music I create whenever I want without needing to acquire permissions or pay unnecessary hefty fees. Second, this experience opened my eyes to the struggle many artists face. There are countless talented musicians who don't get the opportunity to bring forth their music because they are shut out by big labels." "With Tijori Music, I aim to provide a platform for artists who go unheard and are looking for a place to showcase their talent. If a song aligns with our label's mandate and is approved by my team, we will offer these artists exposure and support without the typical barriers and complications. I believe in paying it forward and creating opportunities for others, especially in a market that feels monopolised from all sides. Tijori Music is here to foster creativity, support new talent and make sure artists have a fair shot." He further added, "I urge my fans and all music lovers across the world to listen to our new release 'Gumshuda' and feel the connection as the composition delves into the depths of romance capturing a bittersweet ache of missing someone special.'" Tijori Music's first single, a heartfelt ballad is sung by singer Shivendra Murmu and features well-known yogini & talented actor Mandeep Kaur along with Australian actor Kumar who makes his debut with this music video which is scheduled to release on 10th of September, 2024 on Tijori Music's YouTube channel. Directed by the skilled Sunvik Bhhardwaj, the music score is by Babli Haque and Meera Sarkar. The video is entirely shot in Melbourne, Australia adding a timeless charm that perfectly complements the harmony of emotions conveyed in the song certain to leave the viewers spellbound.
